Liddell Destoys Sobral In 1st Round!

By David Lahr: Chuck “The Iceman” Liddell (19-3), the UFC Light heavyweight champion, once again defended his title, this time stopping the hapless Brazilian Renato (Babalu) Sobral (27-6) at 1:35 of the first round at the UFC 62 competition, at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The match started out somewhat slowly with Sobral seeming very cautious of Liddell’s power, perhaps remembering last time he fought Liddell in 2002, a match Sobrato was stopped in the 1st round after absorbing a kick to the head. However, after a brief feeling out period in the first few minutes of the round, Sobral suddenly launched a suicidal attack, charging Liddell and throwing wild hammakers, none of which did any damage to Liddell.

However, Liddell stepped back and tagged Sobral with a couple of beatiful punches that dropped Sobral to the canvas, at which point Liddell stood over him and methodically pounding him into submission. The referee, “Big” John McCarthy, finally stepped in and stopped the bout, after observing that Sobral was about to be seriously hurt.

Afterwards, Liddell mentioned possibly fighting Tito Ortiz, a fighter that Liddell has previously knocked out in the 2nd round, at UFC 47.
