A Hellrazor of a Night (full card)

The fight of the night was the war between Chris Camozzi and Tony Barker. In the first minute, Chris and Tony went back and forth trading huge bombs. Not combinations or jabs but giant hits that made that unmistakable sound of leather against flesh. Eventually Camozzi found himself in mount position on Barker and landed some vicious elbows and even a double fisted hammer strike ala Kazushi Sakuraba. Not to stop the there, with Barker on his back, Chris stood up and delivered an axe kick to Tony’s midsection much like Wanderlei Silva used to do against Sakuraba during the Pride days. Barker fought back admirably and even cracked Camozzi in the face with his heel while he was on the ground and Chris was standing over him. Chris took the heel and looked surprised before laughing it off. Chris repeatedly took Tony down and then stood up and motioned to Tony to stand up. The MMA Times scored this 10-9 for Camozzi but Barker fought back very well. He looked good on his back and counter-punched strongly.

In round two, we saw a reversal of fortune as Barker seemed to find something inside screaming to him to bring the fight to Camozzi. Just like the line in Goodfellas, “once in awhile, everyone takes a beating” and Chris took one albeit for a short while. With Tony in mount position raining down elbows and fists, Chris did a beautiful reverse and took the mount position back. The blows to his face seemed to energize him as he delivered payback with his own brand of pain. At 2:22, the ref. stepped in to stop the storm of blows and thereby setting up a wonderful contest in the near future between Chris Camozzi and champion Donnie Lyles.

Eric Faygas delivered another strong performance against Alfredo Corona that demonstrated his excellent athletic ability. After Eric took Alfredo down early, he got the back position and tucked his feet and ‘hooked’ them into his midsection. This scene was repeated a few more times during the fight as Alfredo would try to throw Eric off but Eric would just latch on and pound him with blows from behind. Eric showed good ring awareness by using all levels of MMA including foot stomps during the clinch, knees on the ground, and just a relentlessness that tires out opponents. When is he turning pro?

In the first fight, Seth Bregman took on Jorge Rangel. Seth, proving that tattoos do make the fighter, dominated Jorge by taking him down, delivering a rear naked choke and a TKO by tap out.

In the second fight, Nic Bushman faced off against Miguel Martinez. Nic cracked Miguel early and often in the first round until Nic was poked in the eye which only spurred him on. In the second round, both fighters planted their feet and traded leather back and forth typical of a Bad Boyz fight. The 3rd round was highlighted by Nic suplexing Miquel and again the battle raged back and forth until the bell rang and the judges gave the win to Nic.

When Ron “Sierra Club” Muir (we made this nickname up) squared off against Jesse “the Gentleman” Henley, you really don’t expect a lot of action with nicknames like that. Who wins in a fight between a tree-hugger and a gentleman? Muir took a lot of heavy shots in the first before succumbing to a armbar. Gentleman wins.

In the first female fight of the evening, Cathilee Albert, came out with a huge raucous posse only to be followed by her opponent, Ann Wyberry, with an equally large posse of her own. Cathilee delivered a beating to Ann and won by TKO due to strikes. Cathilee looked great in action.

In the 5th fight of the evening, Chino Montoya took on Lumumba Sayers for the RMBB 185 lb. title fight. Sayers took Montoya down and landed some huge punches and elbows before Montoya reversed him. Losing the fight up to this point, Montoya put a rear naked choke on Sayers for the Randy Couture ‘comeback moment’ of the night.

In the 7th fight, Cruz Chacon faced off against Brian Cravin. Cravin recently fought Eric Heinz and got a surprise victory. In the middle of the round, with a fairly even match, Brian got caught with a straight right and they went to the ground. Cruz immediately got him in an armbar but Brian thought he could break out of it. Brian lifted Cruz off the ground and slammed him back down on his back but the armbar held and in fact injured Brian’s elbow. “I heard his elbow pop” said Cruz who added, “I hope he is OK.” After the fight, it was hard to tell whether he had a bad hyperextension or actually a broken arm.

In the 2nd female fight of the evening, Alicia Gumm introduced herself to Tammie Schneider. Alicia dominated most of the fight with effective strking and ground work to get a TKO win.

Daniel Douglas took on Douglas Lima in the evenings most confusing name card. “Which one is Douglas?” Mallory asked me. Lima stunned Daniel with a good right and then landed a few more hard punches before Daniel went to the ground and gave up his back. Lima capitalized on this and won with a rear naked choke.
