Lampley Arrested For Domestic Violence

By Jason Kim: According to TMZ.com, Jim Lampley, 57, the HBO sports broadcaster, was reportedly been arrested for domestic violence to his girlfriend in San Diego, California. In addition, he has been charged with violating of a restraining order and attempting to stop a witness from giving information. Following the arrest, it is reported that Lampley posted $35,000 bail, so he could be released from the Vista Jail in San Diego.

Lampley, one of the more outspoken broadcasters on the HBO boxing team, has been working for the network since 1987, coming after his work with the ABC network, where he worked on broadcasting college football games. His style is of broadcasting is often terse and laconic, with a kind of “tell it like it is” approach to reporting. In some ways, he reminds me of a younger Howard Cosell, back when Howard was still at the top in the sports broadcasting business. Though, I must admit, the smile that Lampley constantly wears on his face when speaking, is somewhat off putting for me, as it looks forced and unnatural, like he’s trying to impress upon us how good of a time he’s having, even when things are going terrible.

Unlike other broadcasters, Lampley isn’t afraid to chide his fellow HBO team members, often putting them on the spot and asking them point blank to explain their views. For this alone, I find Lampley interesting to listen to, since you never know what he will say, as he doesn’t play by the same rules as the other broadcasters.
