Al Bernstein and MMA personality Big John McCarthy slated to appear on premiere of TKO on AM 830 this Saturday

Santa Monica, CA – Legendary boxing announcer Al Bernstein will be the featured guest on the premiere of “TKO powered by SMV,” the hybrid fight radio talk show on AM830 Los Angeles this Saturday night at 10PM. The veteran Showtime announcer will appear live on the show as well as a pre-recorded interview with MMA referee and announcer Big John McCarthy. McCarthy is in town for the Affliction: Banned MMA card in Anaheim and conducted an interview with TKO’s Dennis Bernstein at a press conference on Wednesday afternoon.

“What a way to debut a show. We’ll be attending the Affliction event at the Honda Center and then walk across the street to do a live post-fight recap. When you pair that with Al’s appearance to chat about the upcoming Cotto-Margarito fight and his soon-to-be launched internet project, the hour will fly. Al has always been gracious in letting me appear on his shows throughout the years and there isn’t a better color analyst in the fight game. The Affliction event stands to be huge and McCarthy’s involvement stirred comments from UFC President Dana White recently. John responds to those words and talks about the long term viability of Affliction as a player in the MMA game (excerpts below),”commented Dennis Bernstein, the show’s host and executive producer.

Earlier in the week, Dennis appeared on AM830’s morning show, ”The Sports Lodge,” with Roger Lodge and Dave Smith to promote TKO and talk about the state of the fight game. “Roger and Dave were gracious to give me a few minutes on Tuesday, we spoke about Cotto-Margarito and the MMA game in general,” Bernstein noted. For those not in the greater Los Angeles area that would like to listen live, TKO will be streamed live on the station’s website, www.am830klaa.com.

Big John McCarthy interview excerpts –

On being called “the enemy” by UFC’s President Dana White – “I laughed, I didn’t take it personally. If Dana thinks that if anybody is doing something with somebody he feels he thinks is a competitor, he’s not happy. That’s OK, but Dana’s not offering me a job, either.”

On Affliction being a new player in the MMA space – “Sure UFC is concerned, they know they’re the big show right now. But anybody that comes out and does something the way that Affliction has, while they’ve spent a lot of money to do it, they can be competition for UFC.”

On why Affliction stands to succeed where others have failed, “Here’s the difference; UFC needs to sell fights because that’s what they do and they do a great job. But if they don’t sell the PPV they’ve got nothing else. Affliction is a business outside of the fight game, a very successful clothing line. So Dana can joke about “the t-shirt guys”, but the success of the company doesn’t depend on the fight events. Affliction is spending money to promote their brand through the fight game instead of some other marketing event.”

On his choice for the main event, Fedor vs. Sylvia, “Fedor’s got to the be favored, he’s beat everyone that’s been put in front of him but don’t sell Tim short. His recent fights have shown that’s he’s become more aggressive. He’s going to come right at Fedor and it should be a classic.”
