UFC 100 Countdown: Jon Jones Vs. Jake O’Brien
By Christopher Salute – Jon Jones and Jake O’Brien should be a fun show. Though, you may not see it on the air. O’Brien prides himself on upsetting big names. Jones, one of those “big names” is touted as a future star in MMA. But with a win over Heath Herring and fights with Cain Velasquez and Andrei Arlovski, O’Brien has the experience to knock the younger and more technical fighter off of his fast-rising path to superstardom.
Jones is well trained in Muay Thai and Jiu-Jitsu with a strong wrestling background. So, he’s dangerous on the ground and on his feet. The difference maker might be if O’Brien has seen enough fights to train against some of the strikes we don’t see from other fighters: spinning elbows and the likes.
O’Brien is also cross-trained in boxing as well as Jiu-Jitsu, though he has never won a fight via submission. His wins, both in the UFC as well as the WEC and other promotions have been split between decisions and knock-outs. But, none of his losses have come from submissions, either. So, I’d expect to see a big striking game coming from both competitors.
Again, I’m no expert. But, I’m going to go against the grain on this one and say that O’Brien has enough experience and is cross-trained well enough to beat Jones.
