Bowles vs Cruz Highlights March 6 WEC Card
NEW YORK, N.Y. (March 2, 2010)- VERSUS, the cable television home of World Extreme Cagefighting® (WEC®), will air its second fight of the year on Saturday, March 6, at 10 p.m. ET, live from the Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio. The main event will feature bantamweight champion Brian Bowles (8-0) as he makes his first title defense against the top contender in the weight-class, Dominick Cruz (14-1). All WEC events are presented in HD and Spanish language SAP where available.
Bowles was crowned champion in August 2009, in a major upset over Miguel Angel Torres (36-2). He is unbeaten in the WEC and known as a heavy-handed striker with amazing finishing ability. Cruz is on a career-high after winning his last four fights and looks to dethrone the champ by using strong wrestling techniques, lethal strikes and takedown tactics.
The second fight on the card will feature a bout between former bantamweight champion Torres and seasoned wrestler Joseph Benavidez (11-1). Torres is consistently ranked as one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the sport and has won 17 out of his last 18 fights. Benavidez is one of the most conditioned athletes in MMA and recently scored a huge victory in his last fight in December by knocking out gifted grappler Rani Yahya in the first round.
Three additional intense match-ups round out the night’s undercard action. First, UFC legend Jens ‘Lil Evil’ Pulver (22-12-1) returns to the cage to face Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt Javier Vazquez (13-4). Vazquez has wanted to fight Pulver for nearly a decade and a win could propel him into featherweight title contention. Deividas Taurosevicius (12-3) and L.C. Davis (15-2) will then face-off in a featherweight battle. Taurosevicius, is looking to earn his third straight WEC win by defeating Davis, a top-level competitor with good boxing and wrestling skills. The final fight of the night will feature a lightweight bout between 23-year old Karen Darabedyan (9-1) and seasoned veteran Bart Palazewski (32-13).
