Highlights from Wednesday’s conference call to discuss the Saturday, Dec. 19, STRIKEFORCE: “Evolution.” Taking part in the call were Cung Le (6-0), Scott “Hands of Steel” Smith (17-6), Josh “The Punk” Thomson (16-2) and Gilbert “El Nino” Melendez (16-2). The latter two will battle for the STRIKEFORCE world lightweight championship and the five-fight card will be televised on SHOWTIME® at 10 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the west coast).

The event will take place at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif. The other televised bouts include: Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza (10-2) vs. Matt “The Law” Lindland (21-6); “King Mo” Lawal (5-0) vs. “Iron” Mike Whitehead (24-7) and “Ruthless” Robbie Lawler (16-5) vs. Trevor Prangley (22-5). The stakes will be high when STRIKEFORCE closes out a spectacular 2009 with the return of one of the most prolific and exciting fighters in Mixed Martial Arts – unbeaten former STRIKEFORCE world middleweight champion Cung Le, who will headline a star-studded lineup at HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif. on Saturday, Dec. 19, on SHOWTIME®.

Joining the legendary Le (6-0) will be five other outstanding and widely recognized 185-pound stalwarts, Scott “Hands Of Steel’’ Smith (16-6), “Ruthless” Robbie Lawler (16-5), Matt “The Law” Lindland (21-6) and highly regarded STRIKEFORCE newcomers Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza (10-2) and Muhammed “King Mo” Lawal (5-0), who will be making their respective highly anticipated debuts for the organization. Reigning Strikeforce World Middleweight (185 lb. limit) Champion, Cung Le, will appear live on the national cable network show, ESPNEWS “The Hot List” on Wednesday, July 16 at 5:10 p.m. EST (2:10 p.m. PST). During the interview, Le, who has appeared repeatedly, of late, on the wildly popular Strikeforce on NBC weekly mixed martial arts (MMA) series, will share his thoughts on the explosive growth of MMA, where he feels the sport is headed and its rumored Olympic potential. Newly crowned Strikeforce World Middleweight Champion, Cung Le (22-0), has been selected to appear in the first-ever mixed martial arts trading card series manufactured by Donruss Trading Card Company. Slated for release in mid-July, “Ring Kings,” produced as an insert series for the larger Donruss “Americana II” set, will be comprised of approximately 30 different trading cards featuring a collection of the sport’s top superstars. Several editions of the Le card, including an autographed version and a version containing swatches taken from Le’s competition shorts, will be issued. Read the rest of this entry »
